Ownership

The land and common facilities are owned by Abundance Ecovillage Corporation and will not be subdivided. ecovillage partnersJohn Freeberg, Lonnie Gamble, and Michael Havelka will initially own Abundance EcoVillage Corporation. As Abundance is built, the ownership of the corporation will shift to the homeowners. The homeowners will eventually own and control all of Abundance EcoVillage Corporation. The lot you build on will be leased from Abundance EcoVillage Corporation. Here's what you get when you buy a place to build a home in Abundance EcoVillage:

Lease on a lot in a neighborhood which will give you the right to build a home. The leases will be for 75 year terms, renewable three times, for a total of 225 years.

Share of stock in Abundance EcoVillage Corporation, which will own the land and common facilities . Initially, the stock will not be voting stock. John , Lonnie, and Michael will initially control the voting shares of the corporation. When 75% of the project is built, the non-voting shares of the homeowners will convert to voting shares, and the homeowners will control the corporation. This is being done to ensure that the original vision of the project gets implemented. Facilities that will be owned by the corporation will include all the land, common building, greenhouses, market garden and orchard areas, energy, waste handling, and water systems.

Allotments in the greenhouses, the market gardening area, and in the orchard area. We've adapted the English idea of allotments to Abundance. In England everyone has the right to a small piece of land where they can grow a garden, which is called an allotment. In Abundance, everyone will have ample room around their home to grow a garden. People will also have an allotment in a separate market garden area, the greenhouses, and the orchard, where they can do more extensive market gardening. One of the reasons for the small lot size in Abundance is to allow room for local food production. We do not expect that everyone will take advantage of their allotment, and we hope to encourage a few individuals to get involved in market gardening by making unused allotments available for this purpose. So those who don't want to garden themselves will be able to get fresh locally produced food from the market garden folks, possibly in a CSA (subscription) format.
