Taxes
There are different tax levies for the different townships in Jefferson County and for the city of Fairfield. Each year the County Auditor determines for that district a levy that will yield enough money to pay for schools, police and fire protection, road maintenance and other services budgeted for that area. Currently the residential property tax for Center Township, where Abundance Ecovillage is located, is $27 per $1000 of a property’s taxable value. For comparison purposes, the city of Fairfield residential property tax is $41 per $1000 of a property’s taxable value. The taxable value is determined by the auditor after applying the state of Iowa’s "rollback" percentages for various classes of property. The residential rollback value is currently less than 50% for the state of Iowa. According to the Jefferson County Assessor’s office a house with an assessed value of $200,000 at Abundance Ecovillage would pay approximately $2300 in property taxes (as of 12/28/2006).
